Thai consonants (continued)
* Consonant-vowel combination characters, not members of any group. ** อ is a special case in that at the beginning of a word it is used as a silent initial for syllables that start with a vowel. Thai consonants (continued)
Thai consonants (continued)The following chart contains Thai consonants, their names and transcription.
Thai ConsonantsConsonants Consonants are divided into three classes: middle, high and low, which help to determine the tone of a syllable. The sounds represented by some consonants change when they are used at the end of a syllable (indicated by the letters on the right of the slash below). Some consonants can only be used at the beginning of a syllable. Thai language InformationThai alphabet is syllabic, consisting of 44 basic consonants representing 21 distinct consonant sounds, each with an inherent vowel: [o] in medial position and [a] in final position. The [a] is usually found in words of Sanskrit, Pali or Khmer origin while the [o] is found native Thai words. The 18 other vowels, diphthongs and triphthongs are indicated using diacritics which appear in front of, above, below of after the consonants they modify. For some consonants there are multiple letters. Originally they represented separate sounds, but over the years the distinction between those sounds was lost and the letters were used instead to indicate tones. Thai is a tonal language with 5 tones. The tone of a syllable is determined by a combination of the class of consonant, the type of syllable (open or closed), the tone marker and the length of the vowel. There are no spaces between words, instead spaces in a Thai text indicate the end of a clause or sentence. The direction of writing in the Thai language is horizontal from left to right. 4月8日 Chinese TonesIn the PinYin system, tone is written as a superscript after the syllable or as a marking on top of the first vowel after a consonant. A consonant is always pronounced with a mid-tone and doesn't have any tonal changes. Tone 1 (mid-tone): The first tone or the mid-tone uses no markings at all. Say a word with a normal tone. Tone 2 (high-tone): The second tone or the high-tone is higher than the mid-tone. For example, pronounce the vowel or diphthong in a higher musical note from the one you use pronouncing the mid-tone. This tone also rises immediately from the mid- tone as compared to the rising tone. Tone 3 (rising tone): The third tone or the rising tone has 2 steps. From the mid- tone, bring down the tone of your voice a couple of notches then slowly raise it to a very high tone. To help you with this pronunciation, sway your head downwards and slowly sway it upwards. Tone 4 (falling tone): The fourth tone or the falling tone literally falls. It's like something heavy falling down. Say a word with a very heavy tone. Tone 5 (abrupt glottal stop): The fifth tone is shorter than the falling tone. It has the same principle as the fourth tone but you pronounce the word a half-time shorter than you would pronounce a word with a falling tone. In addition, you have to have an abrupt glottal stop. How can I teach Chinese languageThe Chinese language, spoken in the form of Standard Mandarin is the official language for both mainland China and Taiwan. It is also one of the four official languages of Singapore. Spoken in the form of Standard Cantonese, Chinese is one of the official languages of Hong Kong and of Macau. It is primarily spoken in the province of Guangdong and in overseas Chinese settlements in the United States, Europe and South-East Asia. PinYin PronunciationPinYin is the method of transliterated input. You are supposed to be aware of the proper transliteration of the hieroglyph you want to find. PinYin can be regarded as the 'alphabet' of Mandarin Chinese. It consists of 21 'consonants' and 16 main 'vowels and diphthongs'. As Chinese is a tonal language, each character pronounced in a different tone will give a different meaning. A character can be pronounced many ways and a character pronounced in the same way may have different meanings. |
